A Good Day

A Good Day
6 x 8 in., oil on panel

Naming this one seemed simple if I thought of it from a bovine's perspective--which, not to insult the cattle, was relatively easy. Hoping if you're reading this, you're having a good day, too.

Study - cattle

Cow Study
9 x 12 in., oil on panel
nfs

This is a quick study I did from some photos I took out in Center Point, Texas. Though cattle are slow, they aren't ideal models because they tend to move around a bit more quickly than I can manage to paint them. I never thought I'd be studying the anatomy of cattle, but life is full of surprises. I actually enjoyed a new type of figure and a deviation from trees for a minute.

The Lookout

The Lookout, 6 x 8

This is a blatant attempt to study the bovine form. A very small form. :) Sketching and drawing cattle (like anything) is a fantastic exercise, but conveying animals convincingly with as few brushstrokes as possible is something one can practice only with a brush. This bull seemed to be looking off in the distance as if he heard something he might want to warn the others about. Not that cattle ever seem to care that much....

And I must mention some very exciting news....my work will officially be part of a three-person show at the Davis Gallery (no relation) here in Austin in April! The opening reception is April 9. I'm very excited about the opportunity and will be hard at work, so forgive me if I don't post quite as regularly for a bit...I'll be laser-focused.

The Onlookers

The Onlookers, 6 x 6
sold
Really happy with this one today. I have always loved paintings with cattle in them; maybe because I grew up in Abilene and various parts of West Texas where they are a consistent part of the landscape. So I was excited to get to do one myself, even if they are just brown and white strokes on an already small canvas. I used a photo I'd taken while visiting a ranch with my husband recently--the cattle were mildly curious about our presence....
